What is metacognition?
More than just "thinking about thinking!"
It is the "reflection" and "monitoring" part of your thinking. In conjunction with other factors of your sensory, short-term, and long-term memory, it helps to dictate how you process and internalize information. In order to get a better idea of the important facets of metacognition, lets take a look at some videos on the subject:
Short on time?
- Short-form introduction
Watch this introduction on metacognition by Dr. Josh Walker at the University of Texas Austin
A little more time?
- Medium-form interview
Watch this for a undergraduate perspective and tips during an interview with Dr. Sondra McGuire at Louisiana State University
Want to go more in-depth?
- Long-form TEDx talk
Watch this talk by Dr. Derek Cabrera on the benefits of being metacognitively aware and why it is important to make it a part of every students' life
Once you've finished watching the videos, continue on by clicking the next section "Calibration" below the "What is metacognition?" tab. Here we will learn about an important subset of metacognitive research on something called "calibration" and how we will use it to determine our own metacognitive awareness related to our abilities in the geosciences.
